My trip to Spain and Portugal was nothing short of exhilarating and something I had dreamed about for years. From historic cities to unforgettable cultural moments, this journey delivered in every way. I often get this question: are guided tours really worth it? After this experience, I can confidently say, yes!
First Impressions of Madrid
We kicked off our adventure in Madrid, arriving a few days early to explore on our own before the guided portion of our tour began. Our first stop, a classic tapas bar called Casa Alberto founded in 1827 full of charm and history. To beat jet lag, we powered through the evening with a visit to the iconic Riu Plaza España Rooftop. Located on the 27th floor above Gran Vía, it offers panoramic views, a glass walkway, and an unforgettable skyline. It was the perfect welcome to Spain.
The next day, we explored the magnificent Royal Palace of Madrid as this is a must see while visiting this beautiful city. I loved the area and we found a wonderful café to indulge in churros con chocolate so delicious.
The Guided Tour Begins
In the evening, we met our tour director and fellow travelers and this is where guided tours truly shine. Our group included people from all over the world, and those connections became one of the most meaningful parts of the journey.
A Seamless Journey Through History
Our first stop was Toledo, a city rich in history and culture. With a local expert, we explored its ancient streets and visited Church of Santo Tomé to see a masterpiece by El Greco. Next came Granada “The City of the Pomegranate” where the depth of Spain’s cultural layers truly came alive.
Seville: A Personal Favorite
Seville was easily one of my favorite stops. We visited the breathtaking Seville Cathedral, home to the tomb of Christopher Columbus. One evening, we ventured out on our own to experience something magical: AIRE Ancient Baths Sevilla. This candlelit spa, set in a 16th-century palace, features a rooftop jacuzzi overlooking the city truly an unforgettable experience. And of course, no visit is complete without seeing Plaza de España—absolutely stunning.
Crossing into Portugal
Our journey continued into Portugal, beginning with Évora. Here we visited the fascinating Capela dos Ossos a chapel decorated with human bones. It was eerie, thought-provoking, and completely unique. In Lisbon, we explored from the Lower Town to Belém, stopping at iconic landmarks like Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries. Then we ventured off on our own again navigating public transportation to visit Cascais, a beautiful coastal town filled with shops, restaurants, and ocean views.
A Moving Experience in Fátima
Visiting Fátima was deeply moving. We joined pilgrims at the Chapel of the Apparitions, one of the most sacred Catholic sites in the world. It was a powerful and peaceful moment.
Spain’s Historic Gems
Back in Spain, we visited Salamanca, known for its golden architecture and vibrant university culture, including the stunning Plaza Mayor. In Ávila, we explored the ancient city walls although I only wish we had more time there!
Back to Madrid
As our nearly two-week journey came to an end, we returned to Madrid. We toured landmarks like the Puerta del Sol and Plaza de Cibeles before spending our final day at the world-renowned Prado Museum. You could easily spend half a day or more there.
So… Are Guided Tours Worth It? Absolutely!
Why Guided Tours Are Worth It:
- Stress-free travel: Transportation, hotels, and logistics are handled for you
- Expert insights: Local guides bring history and culture to life
- Access to key sites: You won’t miss the highlights
- Built-in community: Meeting fellow travelers adds a whole new dimension
Why Independent Time Matters:
- Some of my favorite moments happened when we explored on our own like visiting the spa in Seville or taking the train to Cascais
- It gives you flexibility to follow your own interests and pace
The perfect trip combines both structured touring and free time to wander.
If Spain and Portugal are on your bucket list, I’d love to help you plan an unforgettable journey that blends the best of both worlds.
